Know your measurements, not your dress size.
There is nothing more frustrating than trying on clothes in a store where nothing seems to fit, even in “your” size. When I started gaining weight after my marriage, I began frequenting sales at the mall and thrift stores. I’d come home in tears because “nothing fit me.” But what that really meant was that none of the size 14 skirts and pants fit me. I was too embarrassed to try clothes with a higher dress size.
However, I’m done with that. After coming across the Shapely Prose blog, I gained the confidence I needed to love myself and my size. I had my husband take my measurements. 48″ bust. 44″ waist. 48″ hips. (Can you tell I’m an apple? I have almost no waist.)
Knowing my actual body size is freeing. Clothing sizes vary from store to store and country to country. I have a size fourteen skirt and a size twenty skirt, and they both fit me perfectly. My size 18 pants fit me as well as my size 22 jeans. But no matter what number is on the clothing item, I know I have the same size body underneath.
When I go to thrift stores now, I start with the largest-sized racks of clothes, even if they’re ten sizes too large. You never know when you’ll come across something that fits your measurements, even when the tag says differently.

I am so glad that you put this out there. I have been a size 7 all my life up until I hit 28. I am 35 and now I am in size 12. I never thought about actually doing the measurements but I think now I will. Thanks for posting this.
